A Proposal for Measuring In-Use Buildings’ Impact through the Ecological Footprint Approach

To reduce the environmental impact of construction sector, sustainable strategies for managing in-use phase buildings must be integrated urgently. Current green certifications present several limitations and, in particular, do not help determine where to focus reducing demand buildings. Among existing indicators, ecological footprint (EF) is most useful assessing buildings’ performance through sources that reveal over-consumption resources. The paper expands EF by taking into account role human behavior over-consumption, and thus efficiency use. After comparing with certifications, demonstrates how a new assessment can describe built-up, energy consumption, water material food drink, mobility, waste generation, recycling potential, occupants building. application case study reliability effectiveness model shows estimated deficit reflects only consumption materials, but also behaviors building users. This highlights need integrating culture users
